A lot of time and elbow grease is spent trying to remove stains from cementitious and regular grouts. Most of the stains in the shower are caused by mould, fungi, bacteria, shampoos, conditioners and hair dyes.

The Problem:

Majority of showers are grouted using standard or cement-based grouts. These types of grouts are very porous meaning they will absorb stains and it’s quite easy for mould to grow in them. Cement based grouts can be sealed, however in a high traffic use area like a shower, sealers can last as little as 2 years. This time frame can be further reduced by using improper cleaning products that contain acids. The tiny pores in these grouts make it easy for bacteria and mould to attach, once attached they’ll continue to grow.

Cleaning the grout

Use of bleach-based products does not solve the problem completely. In most cases, these products only remove the surface mould. It is important to remember that mould grows within the cement-based grout joint and not only on its surface. When bleach and bleach-based products are applied, they lighten the mould and freshen up the grout, however, this is only a temporary fix due to the fact that the root structure of the mould is still deep inside the grout joint.

Overuse of bleach products can corrode the grout which will make it even more porous, worsening the mould and stain issue.

The Solution:

Epoxy Grout!

At Tile Tech Solutions we have taken regular shower re-grouting to a new level, using the king of grouts – epoxy grout. For years, epoxy grout has been used in commercial applications to provide a hygienic, stain, mould and chemical resistant surface. We have implemented the same idea to showers.

What we do:

We remove your old grout using specialised machinery to a required depth
We remove the old silicone and clean the silicone joints
We clean and vacuum the residue from the joints and prepare them for epoxy grouting
We make the epoxy mix on site to a colour of your choice (selection of colours is available)
We install the epoxy grout
We install new sanitised silicone on all movement joints

Remember: Epoxy re-grouting is not for everyone. It takes years of experience and knowledge to master epoxy grouting. It’s the most difficult grout to work with and there are no second chances due to its fast curing times and precision in mixing. Benefits of Epoxy Re-Grouting your shower:

Stain Resistant – It is extremely difficult to stain epoxy grout with shampoos, conditioners, most hair dyes, wine and harsh cleaning chemicals.
Never needs sealing – Unlike cement based grouts, epoxy grout does not require sealing.

Taking care of epoxy grout:

Even though it is extremely strong, waterproof, stain and mould resistant it should still be included in the regular cleaning of your shower or wet area. In the case of cement based grouts – stains, soap scum, mould, fungi and bacteria can grow INSIDE the joint, making them permanent hence the requirement of re-grouting. However, in case of epoxy grout, above mentioned stains can only grow ON THE SURFACE of the joint, making them cleanable if regular cleaning is maintained. You will find cleaning and maintenance much easier and more cost effective.
